Sakurai Features on All Models

General

All Sakurai presses are built with a heavy-duty design and manufactured for a long life. The press is designed to use a continuous oil bath with filtration feeding oil to all critical internal moving parts to insure long life with minimum downtime. Drive gears and cams are flame hardened to assure longevity. Digital programmable controllers control the main press electronics. These controllers have the ability to accept a software program upgrade. The main drive motor is of a maintenance free, brush free, inverter controlled style to minimize maintenance and downtime.

Feeder

The feeder is a continuous stream feed style using a rotary valve suction system with telescoping pickup suckers. A separate set of forwarding suckers, an aluminum feed board, a multi zone suction belt system, a vacuum hold down system at the in-feed position, and mechanical pull side guide registration system is utilized to insure smooth and reliable sheet feeding.

Sakurai’s feeder utilizes an electronic (ultra sonic style) and mechanical double sheet detector, late, early and skewed sheet detectors. A side guide detector, motorized feed board, electronic static eliminator, sheet skew and sheet feeder timing adjustment are all standard. The use of a drop down pull in wheel with pressure adjustment insures smooth reliable sheet feeding. An electronic diagnostic panel provides the operator with information regarding feeder trip offs. The press has the ability to remotely adjust feeder timing to insure proper in-feed timing at all press speeds and paper thickness. The feeder has a feeder table and the ability to preload stock on an auxiliary pile. Two feeder pile boards are provided.

Automation –All Sakurai presses include the following automation:

  • Sheet Size Presets – The Sakurai sheet size preset system allows for the adjustment of the sheet size components on the feeder and delivery. These adjustments are automatically moved through the control console and are selectable from either a stored menu or entered into a graphic user interface. These adjustments include the following: side rails at paper stacking section, feeder head position, pressure adjustments between impression cylinder and blanket cylinder, side and rear edge paper stacking guides in the delivery section.
  • Automatic Plate Changer – The Sakurai plate changing system can remove a plate and mount a plate without the use of tools. The plate changer will automatically find the tail of the plate, unclamp, reverse, and unclamp the lead edge with a single pushbutton. The new plate will then be inserted, clamped, pressured, rotated to the tail that is automatically inserted into the tail clamp, clamped, and tensioned with a single push button operation. The plate cylinder will have register pins that are fixed in the cylinder at the 425mm position in order to assure consistent plate fit and conformity with standard punch and CTP systems. The plate changer does not require any tail bend and can easily mount polyester plates, eight mil material, allow for the use of two sided plates and be able to easily remount and reuse plates. The automatic plate changer is equipped with a redundant backup system to easily manually mount plates in less that 2 min. per plate in the case of an automatic system failure.
  • Automatic Ink Roller Washers – Sakurai’s automatic ink roller washers are used to automatically rinse the ink and dampening rollers via three different operator selectable programs that alter the amount of solvent and the duration of the wash-up.
  • Auto Sequence - An auto sequence button is used to automatically initiate the startup of the feeder, activate the dampening and ink rollers, put the press on impression, and up to programmed running speed.
  • Running Register – The remote running register system allows for easy electronic control of the fit and register of the plates via a touch panel control located at the delivery control station. This register adjustment can move the plate cylinder vertically, horizontally and skew the position of the plate without stopping the press.
  • Blanket Washers- The Baldwin Impact blanket wash system incorporates the use of a special cloth to clean and scrub the blanket. The system is a factory supplied item and fully integrated with the press electronics. The control takes place from the console of the press. The blanket washer has the ability to use three wash patterns for light, medium, or heavy washes in order to conserve time and material. In order to limit VOC emissions and reduce the creation of potentially hazardous waste, no liquid solvent systems is used.

Cylinders

Sakurai cylinders consist of heavy-duty chrome plated impression, blanket and plate cylinders. Sheet transfer takes place via cam closed gripper shafts utilizing diamond gripper pads to assure consistent and stable sheet transfer. Plate and blanket cylinders have bearer to bearer contact. The adjustment of impression cylinder pressure takes place through an electronic motor that can be adjusted from the press console. The blanket cylinder utilizes pre-clamped blankets and a double real tensioning device to assure fast and accurate mounting of blankets.

Inking System & Console

The Sakurai inking system consists of 18 ink rollers, four ink form rollers each of different diameter, drop down ink fountains, motorized ink fountain roller, remote fountain roller sweep control, and programmable automatic ink roller wash up system. Ink rollers have positive settings to assure quality and consistency.

The ink fountain consists of segmented keys that do not require the use of a foil or liner. The segment can be moved individually to precisely adjust the caliper between the fountain roller and the ink key. The ink ductors are programmable to different ratios in order to accurately control light coverage jobs.

The press inking units are remote controlled from the central control console and will be adjustable for density level at each fountain key and overall at each print unit. The ink console is configured to accept a CIP3 file in order to create a calibrated pre-inking profile to pre-set the ink keys prior to each make ready. Job storage will take via floppy disk or network hard drive.

Dampener

The Sakurai dampening system consists of a continuous style using a pan, metering, form, and two oscillating rollers to insure consistent and smooth dampening of the printing plate. The dampening form roller utilizes a speed reduction design as a means of reducing the build up of debris on the plate surface, (delta motion). The dampening unit will function without alcohol to reduce VOC emissions and provide a safe work environment. The re-circulator will filter and cool the fountain solution to assure proper water feed and print quality.

The press dampening system is adjustable from the central control console for the following adjustments: Pre-dampening to insure efficient and low waste during start-ups. The ability to integrated or segregated the bridge roller to the ink and dampening system. This function is to insure consistent ink and dampening balance, and avoid emulsification during light or heavy coverage production. The dampening linearity adjustment between press speed and dampening system insures consistent ink and dampening solution balance during varying speed production. The Sakurai dampener also has the ability to skew the metering roller in order to control the amount of water supplied across the width of the plate. This is a critical factor in reducing design based ghosting and streaks.

Delivery

The delivery system of the press utilizes independent speed controlled vacuum slow down wheels, sheet decurler, blow down bars and delivery air fans with individual zone control, sheet removal system. The press is equipped with an anti-offset powder spray system providing consistent powder distribution, and a separate air pump.

Coating Unit

The Sakurai Coater was designed for fast make-ready and register of flood and spot coating plates. The coating cylinder has speed clamps with a pin registration system that allow for fast and accurate plate changes. The coating unit also has a complete running register system that allows the operator to fit difficult spot coating plates to the printed plate. The Sakurai Coater utilizes a single anilox roller with an in-closed Harris & Bruno chambered doctor blade. This system is recognized throughout the industry as the best method to apply coating. The re-circulation system is also fully automated with a single push button make-ready and wash-up in order to maximize make-ready’s and wash-ups. A single push on the touch screen will load the chamber against the roller, purge the water from previous wash-ups, pump fresh coating, and automatically switch into the recirculation mode all within 5 minutes. The wash-up is effortlessly performed by the press of a button. The operator is free to perform other functions during coater setup and wash-up.
